Marley & Me

I've finally finished reading Marley & Me ~ "The heartwarming and unforgettable story of a family in the making and the wondrously neurotic dog who taught them what really matters in life".

This is a must read for all dog lovers! I learned a lot more about labradors. It takes a lot of responsibility. I didn't know dogs grey too when they get old!

The book records the life of Marley from the time of his "adoption" as a puppy till his death. You get to know this dog as he journeys with the writer & his family, from the time they were newly married to having kids, like a personal friend & you feel you're a part of the life of the dog, endearing him to you. You'll find yourself laughing & crying as you read along. I nearly choked on my tears as the book went into its last few chapters when Marley was reaching the end of life's journey.

Don't you just love dogs? Unfortunately, I don't own one.

  1. One main reason why i do not keep pet is the fear of heartache when he/she pass on :( My daughter's hamster died last week. Though we r all mentally prepared, there's still this ache and missing....remembering the cute little face, the incidents.

  2. Yes, especially when they die a violent death.

I used to rear some chicks (my bro bought them to do some science experiment on effects on sound). They soon became pets. However, 1 of the chicks was a weaker one, & was being bullied, so we separated it from the rest. It was getting stronger when 1 day, horror of horrors, it was eaten by a cat! I still recall vividly what was left of it...1 wing & 2 feet. I absolutely wailed.

I had hamsters too and 1 of them died a mysterious death (I suspect it was killed by the other). I woke up 1 morning discovering it lying in the cage, dead...it looked exactly like those cartoons where you see the mouse (ok, it was grey in colour) with crossed eyes & tongue sticking out. Think there was some blood. Well, the other hamster died of strep disease.
All of them were buried somewhere in my garden. But since my house got renovated, they are probably not around anymore (they might probably have "dissolved" with the soil already).
