GE & me (2)

Just 2 more days and it's polling day.

Honestly, I've only been hearing the opposition side of things, or rather the supporters since I don't follow the papers so closely (the effects of social media), which everyone says is siding the ruling party. I've been rather alarmed by the 'anger' I hear, even among people I know, and uncertainty has thrown itself in my face. Actually, it's getting kind of "scary" to me that it sounds like some are pushing for blind opposition, i.e. opposing just for the sake of opposing. But I also believe that there are grounds for the dissent, what with the mishandling of issues in recent times. And someone should just stop that big shot up there from sabotaging his own party any further.

For me, it all boils down to which zone I'm in. You can say I'm narrow-minded at not "looking at the big picture", but there are stronger opposition parties and there are weaker ones, and I won't say I'm pro- or anti- opposition or ruling party. I do respect some of the opposition leaders like Low Thia Khiang and Chiam See Tong who are powerful leaders, whom I might have voted for if I were in their constituencies. And I would not vote for certain PAP candidates, like MBT or LSS. So to give the party contesting a chance, I decided to watch the rally speech given by its Secretary-General, which unfortunately, didn't leave me feeling exceptionally inspired and well, I don't feel exactly secure in the candidates for my constituency. I also browsed through their website too, and read their plans for my ward. Hmm... However, I'm also not so sure of my particular ward as the MP managing my area passed on last year.

Ah well, whatever my decision, to vote or not to vote at all, I'll have to live with it and "repent" if anything goes wrong. And maybe I'll stand corrected. :P Politics is a sensitive issue and hope some of my friends don't alienate me because of this because I'm really not so political. Nobody is perfect and no government is perfect. One party can rise at one time, but fall the next. What I can fault the ruling party is that they were too into outward success than inward, too much on the survival of Singapore in the global economy and neglected the survival of Singaporeans, which matters to the former too since we are people-reliant as a small nation with no natural resources. And of course their 死要面子antics that have resulted in their fall in standing. And yes, there's a certain amount of complacency to be addressed. However, sometimes I feel we ourselves might have propagated all this behaviour. What I'm certain is that with the strong contest, there will be a more balanced parliament than before after this elections and PAP will have a wake-up call to be in touch with the community again and be humbled. There should be a nice proportion of all parties, PAP inclusive.

Amidst it all, I heard a small voice going "if you're unsure, pray about it", which reminded me that no matter what I hear from others (or not hear), we should approach matters objectively and not emotionally and most importantly, as it is considered an important decision which will affect our next 5 years at least, seek the Lord. I don't know what will be the prompting or if there will be an absolute answer, but I leave the elections in His hands for if He wishes, who dominates and rules will be given by Him.
