How Do I

I finally got down to presenting this song which I wrote February of last year at tonight's anniversary session (I mistakenly said "last Feb" which would have meant just 2 months ago).

The gist of it is of a girl who is in love with someone but can’t/won’t tell him. She’s actually frustrated that she can’t move on because this person occupies her heart, and she can’t seem to replace him, but she wants to move on, except she can’t help herself. I was trying to portray a girl frustrated, weak yet strong, who is willing to let go, but don't know how to. I think a lot of girls have this kind of feeling?

Before anyone asks anything, this song was actually inspired by a Carpenter’s song I Just Fall In Love Again which starts with “Dreaming, I must be dreaming…”. Well, it was in a way, as I was inspired mainly by the tune of the first few words only. I felt like writing a song starting with the words "How Do I" and this song came about (I tend to work with keywords & phrases).

As the song wasn't recorded tonight, I'll just post the lyrics for the time being:

How Do I
Verse 1:

How do I stop myself from feeling pain
How do I get rid of this man in my heart
The man that I love
The man that I desire
He’s the one that’s causing all this trouble

Verse 2:
How do I forget the face of my man
How do I walk the days ahead in the wait
Does he know my pain
The prayers that I say
And all I want are answers to move on

Chorus:
I’ve lost my way
In this lonely walk I face
A heart that longs for love from you today
I’ve lost my hope
While waiting for the day
That you would feel the same for me
The love I cannot say

Verse 3:
How do I speak to you when I see you face-to-face
How do I let you know my feelings inside
As years pass us by
I’m trapped by my denial
‘Cause no one can I find to take your place
When you’re taking up the space

(Chorus)

Bridge:
You make me happy
You make me sad
My heart beats for you
Like the ripples that winds blow
My tears keep me company
As night draws me close
To the woe and dream that I will find

(reprise chorus)

I'm not sure if anyone noticed a subtle play of words (I like to do that) and sensed a build-up of the tone to the song. Actually, the first part of the song, I referred to the guy as “the man” or “he”, like trying to be more distant. Then later, I started using “you” to be more direct, to show the frustration and maybe a bit more "confrontational"?

  1. Funny, although I'm big on the Carpenters, I've never heard of the song "I Just Fall In Love Again" before. But I went to search it up and it's a beautiful song. Thanks for introducing it to me.

Your songs tend to have a slow, melancholic and wistful quality to them. As you said last night, it seems like you can't write fast and happy songs, haha! I just can't imagine you writing an upbeat song.

  2. Realised a few people sang this song as well, but I still prefer the Carpenters' version. There's actually a wiki article on it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Just_Fall_In_Love_Again

    Hmm..."wistful". I like that. :)
Yah, I can't imagine myself writing an upbeat song as well.
