1st vocal class lesson

I started novice (what they call "primer") vocal class today. It's at Believer Music where we focus more on worship. But of course, as all singing lessons go, the basics need to be learnt.

It started off with talking about why we are so drawn to music and why our voice is at a different level from other instruments.

Why we are so drawn to music:
1) It is instilled by God in our spirit (I believe we live to worship Him)
2) It connects
3) an universal language
4) can be used for healing/ministering
5) creates moods

About the voice:
1) It's a gift from God - we're born with it
2) unique - each of us have our own unique voice
3) 1 of the most special/intimate form of communication, displays emotions
4) able to speak words, unlike other instruments
5) portable - we carry it around wherever we go.

It was followed by a test of our individual singing voices. And I didn't realise I was nervous till I started singing. I could perfectly hum the tune before that and feel my voice, but then when I started singing, I felt something "blocked". Hope I can overcome that. What else do I hope to accomplish? Find my pitch. It's awkward when I need to change key in the middle of a song.
Anyway, of course, the most basic thing was to learn how to breathe, so essentially, that was the main part of the lesson after that.

Well, hopefully, I can master something at the end of the course. Although it ends beginning of Jan, hopefully it'll help me in my concert performance in November. Also, maybe 1 day I can somehow serve in the worship ministry in 1 way or the other.

  1. Did you take up your vocal lessons because of the mini-concert?

  2. Hmm...let's just say it was one of the catalysts.

I was considering also worship ministry. Since my instrumental skills are quite limited, I might see if vocals might be a better choice.

Maybe next time I should go brush up on my violin as well, though i will need to find a school for that. But I've been procrastinating that for the longest time...haven't even repaired my violin after so long!
