Was just pondering about human behaviour in terms of whether one would go to a movie alone or not. I know of some people that will not go to the movies if they didn't have company, but others (like me) who would go to the movies on their own. Just like how some people who won't eat alone (outside).
Personally, I don't mind going to the movies alone, and sometimes I kind of enjoy it, especially for certain types of shows. Anyway, you can't really talk to your friend much during the show.
I believe I started cultivating this habit during my Uni days when I went to NTU. You know, you have free time in the afternoons after class and you're staying in the hostel. This induced me to go to Jurong Point sometimes to catch a movie. Maybe also because in the Uni days, one usually gets more allowance. :P Don't recall going to the movies much when I was younger.
Anyway, coming back to my "analysis", I shall speak in the perspective of someone who would go to the movies on their own.
1) maybe you really enjoy watching movies and if there's a particular movie you want to catch, you don't want to miss it, even though your friends don't wan't to, are not free or have watched it already. So you just go ahead and catch the movie.
2) maybe you have a preference to watch certain types of shows alone. It could be a weepy show and you might not want to be seen sobbing away by your friends (unless of course they would be crying beside you). Or it could be an "artsy" or "deep" film that you want to watch & reflect on in your own space.
3) you can be an impulsive moviegoer and if you're free, you just see which movie is playing and suitable and you just buy the ticket and watch it. (This is not me though coz I usually plan my movie schedule)
4) you're just too lazy to organise a movie outing or you prefer a more flexible schedule.
5) (though it doesn't seem a happy reason) - you just want to get away.
I'm more the 1 & 2 type.
Wonder what do my friends think and which category they are?

Personally, I fall into none of the categories cos I wouldn't go to the movies alone. =)
ReplyDeleteI just feel that if I really really want to catch a movie, I'll drag someone along to watch with me. If no one wants to come along, then I won't go and I'll just wait for the DVD to come out. (Besides, I'm not much of a movie-goer anyway.)
I believe in eating alone (though I know it's a huge taboo to a lot of girls), but when it comes to going to the movies, I just think that I'll never go alone. It's just weird to buy tickets to go watch a movie alone, in my opinion.
Of course, to each his or her own.
For me, I'd rather wait for the DVD to come out and watch it at home, than go watch a movie alone. =)
I'm No. 5! Haha.
ReplyDeleteI remember watching "I Not Stupid 2" alone after a super stressful day in uni. Was so stressed I bought a big bag of chips n munched nosily away as I laughed n cried at the movie.
Other than that, I don't recall watching any other movie alone hee.
P.S I HATE eating alone outside.
J: The problem is when I buy the DVD, I never get down to watching it! I'll just keep thinking I can watch it anytime.
ReplyDeleteActually, most of the time, if I watch a film alone, it's becoz my movie khakis might already have watched the film or I know they won't watch it.
Hmm...another thought came to mind...are guys less likely to watch movies alone then?
Eating alone: well, I sometimes eat alone, but I always choose a nice environment like a cafe just to chill. But if it's hawker centre, coffeeshop or foodcourt, I'll rather tabao or just skip the meal and grab a snack instead.
Well, I can't speak for all guys, but I would suppose that most guys would have absolutely no problems going to watch a movie alone (just like most guys would have no problems eating out alone).
ReplyDeleteBut it's just that for me, in the first place I hardly watch movies...so if I ever go watch a movie, I wouldn't think of going to watch it alone. I just think it's quite weird. I definitely would want to do it with friends.
Just like going to watch a stage production or a concert alone...I just find it rather strange don't you think?
I think I'll only catch a movie by myself when the theatre is going to be relatively empty cos it's kinda weird to sit in a crowd cinema hall with throngs of movie-goers in pairs or groups and I'm the odd one out.
ReplyDeleteAs for eating alone, well similarly I typically do it during off-peak times.. but if it's lunch-time or peak coffee hours I think it's still fine. Just plug in the earphones and read a book. :p
J: Ok, I can't say about stage productions and pop concerts, but I sometimes watch those SSO concerts or recitals (that kind of concerts) alone leh...but these days less.
ReplyDeleteV: Haha...no wonder we hang out together. sama sama...I think that usually, if I watch a movie alone, it would be like it's already into at least the 3rd week of screening, so yah, I think there's less people then.
